This research program is directed towards understanding reasons for the high rates of tobacco use among individuals with major psychiatric disorders. We seek to develop novel treatments for nicotine addiction and major neuropsychiatric disorders using drugs directed to nicotinic receptors systems and/or related neurotransmitter pathways in the brain. We offer a number of treatment and non-treatment studies directed primarily towards individuals with no current psychiatric disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar affective , and also to those with major depressive illnesses. This research is supported by the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD), The Donaghue Medical Research Foundation, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs VISN 1 MIRECC.
